What distinguishes a good golf course?
A skilled architect knows what stimulates and creates enjoyment, excitement, and interest. They also know what causes boredom and irritation. These things are subjective and therefore consideration should be given to all categories of golfers.
Some important criteria that prominent golf course architects have in the recipe for a good golf course include the following (listed in order of importance):
- Safety. For players as well as for those moving near the golf course.
- Variation. The more variation in the character of the holes, the better.
- The course should require many different types of shots (shot values). This applies across the entire course i.e. from tee, at approach, and around green.
- Obstacles should be visible to the player before the shot is played.
- Avoid stiffness and regularity. For example, all bunkers should not look exactly the same and be at the same distance and place hole after hole. Tees should be cut in a way that suits the surroundings etc.
- Imitate forms created by nature on site. Even if something is constructed by humans, it should look natural and blend into the surroundings.
- Richness of nuances. Attention to detail is important.
There are more criteria than these, but they do not need to be highlighted at the moment.
Much is already good. Improvements can be made primarily on points 1, 2, 3, and 4. This means a lot for the whole because they are arranged with the most important first.
Point 1 Safety.
Certain safety risks are still current at Rya. These are mainly related to play on holes 1, 3, 4, and 8. To some extent also when playing on holes 9 and 10 and 17 and 18. The safety concerns of hole 7 should be out of the world considering the new tee boxes and the new stretch of the hole.
Holes 3, 4, and 8 should always be where they are, they belong to the signature holes of the course. The club should do everything in its power to ensure that these holes can remain. Much is gained with information to the players about what is allowed and not allowed. Signs, notices, information in course guide, special right-of-way rules, and similar can help.
